A myocyte is a muscle cell, and in your skeletal muscles they are giants of the cellular world. Where most of your cells are tiny rounded specks, a single muscle fibre can run the whole length of the muscle, centimetres long, packed with hundreds of nuclei and striped from end to end. Those stripes (the “striations” Ayanda’s squat red people wear) are ranks of molecular machinery: two proteins, actin and myosin, laid in overlapping rows. When the signal comes, myosin gears grab the actin filaments and haul, hand over hand, millions of times a second, and the whole cell shortens. That’s all a contraction is: an unimaginable number of microscopic tugs, perfectly synchronised.
The story’s proverb, Atrophy is Weak, is real physiology too. Muscle is expensive tissue, and your body is a ruthless economist: fibres that aren’t used are quietly dismantled within weeks. Use, and the body invests; stop, and it withdraws. Movement is not just what muscle does, it is how muscle stays alive.
And Ayanda’s deepest grievance is anatomically true: myocytes never move themselves. Not once. Every contraction of skeletal muscle in your life, every step, blink and word, began somewhere else, as a command they receive through the Receptor Gates and obey together as a Motor Unit. The freedom she goes looking for is the freedom the whole system is built around.
You own several hundred muscles and roughly a quarter of a billion muscle fibres, and not one of them has ever asked why. Then again, when you obey an urge without questioning it, who is contracting whom?
