One neuron fires, and every fibre it commands contracts as one. All or none.

“We move in U-nison!” thunders Ayanda’s father. He isn’t preaching. He’s stating a law of physiology.

A motor unit is one motor neuron, one long nerve cell reaching down from the spinal cord, together with every muscle fibre it commands. That might be five fibres, in the muscles that swivel your eyes, where movements must be exquisitely fine; it might be a thousand or more in the great muscles of your thigh, where power matters more than precision. And the law is absolute: when the neuron fires, every fibre in its unit contracts, completely, together. There is no half-hearted member, no fibre that sits this one out. All or none.

This is why Ayanda’s refusal shakes the Kingdom so deeply. A single fibre declining its signal isn’t a small rebellion, under the rules of the body, it’s an impossibility. If one Unit can decline, the whole system of command is in question. The elders’ fear is not moral outrage. It is the vertigo of watching physics break.

How does your body make movement smooth and graceful, if every unit is all-or-nothing? By recruitment: for a gentle movement it calls up a few small units; as effort grows it calls larger and larger ones, thousands of on/off switches blending into what feels, from inside, like one continuous act of will. Grace is a crowd of absolutes, carefully staggered.
