The Yummies: Acetylcholine & the Moment

One spark, one leap, one shower of acetylcholine across the synaptic cleft.

The sacred reward of Big Toe has a real name: acetylcholine, the molecule that carries every command from nerve to muscle.

Where a motor nerve meets a muscle there is a gap, a genuine space, a few millionths of a centimetre wide, called the neuromuscular junction. The nerve never touches the muscle. Instead, when a nerve impulse arrives, the nerve ending releases thousands of tiny bubbles, each packed with a messenger molecule called acetylcholine. The molecules drift across the gap like falling sparkles and land on receptor gates studding the muscle’s surface. When enough gates catch enough of them, the muscle fires and contracts. In the story, this shower is The Moment, and the sparkles are the Yummies themselves.

The detail the story leans on is true and strange: the muscle has no way to refuse a properly delivered signal. Receptors that catch acetylcholine open; the contraction follows. What looks from below like a reward for devotion is, from above, simply a command being obeyed. The bowing changed nothing. The Yummies were always going to fall.

But there’s a second layer, and it’s the one Ayanda smells as a trap. Your brain runs a real reward chemistry, dopamine circuits that fire for sugar, novelty, approval, and that system genuinely can leave you hungrier an hour later, always wanting, never full. The Kingdom’s worship of the Yummies is every craving you’ve ever obeyed without asking who sent it.

Somewhere between the falling sparkle and the opened gate, a command becomes a feeling of wanting. At what point, in you, does a signal stop being an order, and start being a choice?
